Deputy County Attorney

I am a thirty-year resident of Kilauea, and have served as a Deputy County Attorney for the County of Kauai for the past four years. As a Deputy County Attorney in the office’s litigation division, I have successfully represented the County in both state and federal court in more than fifty civil cases, and in dozens of administrative proceedings before the County Planning Commission, the Hawaii Labor Relations Board, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, and the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Some cases of note that I have handled include defending the County from a $7 million  personal injury suit, successfully defending the Kauai Police Department’s implementation of body cameras, and recently filing suit on behalf of the County to enforce the public’s right to access Kauapea Beach on the north shore.

EDUCATION

I attended law school at the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, from which I graduated with honors and specialty certificates in both Native Hawaiian Law and Environmental Law. While attending law school I served on the Law Review, captained the Native American Moot Court Team, and worked as a teaching assistant in constitutional law.

Immediately following law school and before returning home to Kauai, I worked as a law clerk to Chief Judge Craig Nakamura at the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals, clerked for Magistrate Judge Barry M. Kurren in U.S. District Court, and Clerked for Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald at the Hawaii Supreme Court. While working as a law clerk I was also an Adjunct Professor at Richardson Law School teaching the first year legal writing course, and assisted the judiciary’s working group, which implemented Hawaii’s new environmental court system.

BEFORE THE LAW

Before law school I lived and worked in Kilauea as a building contractor, cabinetmaker, and furniture builder. Outside of work, I am a long time member of Hanalei Canoe Club, where I am currently the men’s coach. I am also a regular participant and sometimes crew captain in the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association. Before becoming obsessed with outrigger paddling, I was a regular competitor and purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
